Routine venipuncture. Preferred: SST (gel barrier), PST (Plasma separator tube), red-topped tube (see storage instructions) RST (rapid separator tube) (Min.: 3 mL of blood)

Delivered to Sample Management within 2 hours of collection

Stability:

Room Temperature for ≤ 24 hours, Refrigerated for 3 days, Frozen for ≤ 3 weeks.  (Avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles).

Causes for Rejection:

Incomplete and/or incorrect sample identification, improper tube type and/or storage, transport. Gross hemolysis.

Specimen Preparation:

Allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature. Centrifuge to separate serum from cells within 2 hours of collection.
