Specimen Requirements:
Collection:

7 mL of blood in SST or red-topped vacutainer tube.  (Min: 3mL) AM collection preferred.  

Storage/Transport:

Delivered to Sample Management within 2 hours of collection.

Stability:

Room temperature   for ≤ 8 hours; Refrigerated for ≤ 48 hours; Frozen >2 days.  (Avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles).

Causes for Rejection:

Incomplete and/or incorrect sample identification, improper storage/transport, and gross hemolysis or lipemia.                   

Specimen Preparation:

Allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature. Centrifuge to separate serum from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer serum from collection tube to labeled plastic transport tube.

Note:

The test can be ordered only once per patient admission for inpatients and once per month for outpatients. Additional requests must have the approval of the laboratory director.  Only SERUM can be used to run this test.    Not available on Week-ends.
